In this feature, we’re thrilled to bring you highlights from our recent conversation with Todd “Max” Carey, the director, producer, and editor behind the groundbreaking documentary tOuch Kink.
Todd’s film is an eye-opening exploration of the kink and BDSM community that cuts through misconceptions and sensationalism to uncover the trust, communication, and vulnerability at its core.
When we sat down with Todd, the first question we had was, Why this film? Why now? Todd shared his inspiration:
“The idea for tOuch Kink came from a desire to challenge the misconceptions around kink and BDSM. Mainstream media often portrays it as something dangerous or deviant, but the reality is far more complex and beautiful. Kink is about trust, communication, and self-expression. I wanted to humanize the community and show the courage it takes to embrace who you are.”
For Todd, the stories in the kink world are stories about relationships—whether with a partner, a community, or even yourself. tOuch Kink takes viewers past the surface to highlight the emotional and psychological connections that make kink such a profound part of people’s lives.
One of the strengths of tOuch Kink lies in the individuals whose stories Todd chose to tell. Each participant brings a unique perspective, showing how kink can be a path to healing, identity, and empowerment:
One of the major themes Todd explores in the documentary—and something we often emphasize on Talking Kinky—is that kink is built on trust, consent, and communication. Todd explained how important it was to show these elements:
“Consent and communication are the backbone of healthy kink dynamics. It takes so much care to create these experiences—negotiating boundaries, checking in, and providing aftercare. I wanted the film to highlight that kink is far from reckless; it’s deeply intentional and relational.”
For many viewers unfamiliar with the kink world, these moments—participants negotiating scenes, checking in with partners, and reflecting on their experiences—serve as powerful educational tools.
Vulnerability is often an overlooked aspect of kink, but tOuch Kink places it front and center. Todd shared a particularly moving moment with Grace that reminded him why he started this project:
“Grace talked about how kink helped her reclaim parts of herself that she’d lost over the years—her confidence, her sense of power. That kind of transformation is so powerful, and it’s what makes these stories universal.”
Similarly, Mistress Evilyne’s struggles with public backlash highlight the challenges faced by those who live authentically in the kink community. Todd hopes that by sharing these stories, the film will help break down the stigma that still surrounds kink and BDSM.
One of the final points Todd shared with us was his hope that tOuch Kink would resonate with audiences, even those outside the kink community:
“At its core, tOuch Kink is about human connection, courage, and self-acceptance. Those are universal themes. Whether or not someone is part of the kink world, I think they can see themselves in these stories. It’s about breaking down assumptions and encouraging open conversations.”
The feedback Todd has received so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Viewers have shared how the film gave them a new perspective on relationships, identity, and even their own desires.
As we wrapped up our conversation, we asked Todd what’s next on the horizon. He shared that he’s currently exploring a follow-up project that dives even deeper into specific aspects of kink, including its psychological and therapeutic benefits:
“I’d love to collaborate with educators and therapists to create resources that build on the themes of tOuch Kink. There’s so much more to explore.”
At the end of our interview, Todd left us with this beautiful message:
“Be curious, be open-minded, and be kind. Kink isn’t for everyone, but there’s so much we can learn from the way these communities approach trust, communication, and self-expression.”
If you haven’t yet seen tOuch Kink, we highly recommend watching it. It’s a film that challenges stereotypes, celebrates vulnerability, and ultimately reminds us of the beauty of human connection.
